Town Hall: Town Hall refers to the 23rd Police District.
Public Violence Mission: From what I gather, it sounds like the officers assigned to this mission look for gang bangers and stop them question them to find out who they are. They then turn in the info at the conclusion of the mission to their supervisor.
Top Ten Target Mission: Units assigned to this mission usually concentrate on the Sunnyside Mall and the Broncho Billy Playlot looking for known troublemakers and see what they are up to, looking for reasons to make arrests.

Any updates here? Was someone hurt, are they okay, did they catch the guys, etc.

Lived in the area for just over 2 years and hate hearing of all the crime recently. However, I have been reading a book called Blue Blood about the NYPD, written by a former police officer who worked the projects in New York (highly recommended, by the way) and he mentioned something interesting. In one of his comments, about moving from the day to night squad was about the information received. What he meant was that, calls of "shots fired" during the day-time tended to be landlords wanting to get people loitering off of their property and the night time calls of "shots fired" tended to be actual shots fired. Just thought I'd share, as sometimes what is broadcast on the police scanner may not be the whole story. Love the blog - and hope to meet some of you on Saturday.
My friend called the alderman's office and spoke with Denise. They said that according to the police department no shots were fired. They said July 4th is around the corner and some people start work fireworks early. Denise also said that no calls were placed to 911 about the incident either. Interesting...
How can they tell if calls were placed to the police? I have (in my work past) tried to get 911 records... it goes through a separate office, separate from the police. I am not sure if "Denise" can really tell you whether or not anyone called the police, unless they themselves monitor police scanners too!
I've spoken with Denise at Ald. Schiller's office as well and I have nothing but good things to say about her. She is the alderman's Chief of Staff. She's very helpful, very well informed and appears to be very knowledgeable about the goings on in Uptown. I spoke with her after the last shooting and she was upfront with me about all her conversations with the police. She even offered to give me her cell phone number in case I had any other concerns. That leads me to believe that what she said to anon 8:18 is true. As honest as she was with me that day, I imagine she'd tell you if she got calls. And she gets calls. If it had been called into 911, she would have known.
I read this blog, as well as Uptown Update all the time and have been very critical of Ald. Schiller. I'm sure I will continue to be in the future. But, if one good thing has come out of all this, I made that one phone call and happened to get someone who lives in the community, has children who have been educated in the community and appears to have a vested interest in making this a better place to live. I give Denise a lot of credit, particularly on that day, for even coming to the phone.

Thanks for your "ode to Denise". Who cares? I posted the comment at 8:18am. I have heard she is polite and professional as well. The comment was not made to be negative towards Denise. I just think it was interesting that the police scanner picked up multiple calls on shots fired and the commander or whoever Denise spoke with denied it. I thought it was interesting and wanted to pass on the word. That's all. And it's not like we haven't been lied to or the violence has been down played in the past.
I live on Sunnyside, and the shots were indeed fired. I heard 'em. While there may be landlords looking to get rid of loitering people, shots were fired on Sunday afternoon. Sigh.
I made the call to 911, one of the several calls to 911 about this. I am a renter, not a landlord, and was trying to enjoy a video game when the shots happened, not trying to shoo anyone away. I met with the beat officers in the alley while they were searching. They smelled gunpowder, that's why they were searching the alley. If someone said there was no call, they are lying. And I would seriously question the honesty of someone in the alderman's office actually knowing what the police have to say about anything, because they have YET to comment on the murder that happened practically on the office doorstep.
